It comes out when the person reaches the ages between 17 to 25. Wisdom teeth are the 3rd and last molars. There are people who would develop only one or two of their wisdom teeth, while some don't grow any at all. It is thought among linguists that it was called wisdom tooth because they appear so late at an age when a person matures and is wiser when the other teeth erupted.
For most people, they experience pain, swelling and tenderness in the site where the teeth are rising when wisdom teeth come out. For some, wisdom teeth grow in misaligned ways or position themselves horizontally; pushing on other teeth, causing problems of overcrowding and damage to other teeth.
Signs and symptoms of wisdom teeth coming out:
- There will be pain at the back of the mouth, on the location of the wisdom teeth.
- Redness and swelling around the site.
- Halitosis
- Difficulty in opening of mouth
- Difficulty in swallowing
- There may be fever due to Pericoronitis
- Bad breath
It is also possible for wisdom teeth to become impacted – Meaning they remain buried and are trapped under your gums, It failed to erupt. This can be seen during X-rays. If it is pushing other teeth out of alignment and causing pain, wisdom tooth extraction may be required. This will be on the discretion of the dentist during the examination.
A wisdom tooth that has fully erupted can be extracted normally, but, for a wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums, will require surgery to remove the portion of bone. To minimize the amount of bone that needs to be removed, the tooth will be extracted in small portions. Local anesthetic will be used for normal extraction, but, if it requires surgery of the gums, there will be selections of sedatives for you to choose from:
- Oral sedatives, the medication will make you drowsy and sleepy during the procedure.
- Nitrous oxide (otherwise known as "laughing gas"), you will inhale this gas through a mask. The effects of the gas wear off fast, allowing you to safely drive home after the procedure.
- Intravenous (IV) sedation, (It will be through the veins), IV sedation works quickly,but, you won't remember much about the procedure. They will still require local anesthetic will still for this procedure.
- General anesthesia is a combination of oral and IV medications you will reach complete unconsciousness.
